A long missing feature has been added to Sametime 8.5.2. A client for Android devices is now available! There has been an alternative client for a couple of weeks called QuipIM, but I guess everyone has been waiting for the „real“ client, right? Now finally it has arrived. The documentation has been posted on the Sametime Wiki Pages.

The problem is that you need sametime client version 8.5.2 with Sametime 8.5.2 server. Thus the need to upgrade the embedded sametime client. One option is to first install the client and then run the sametime upgrade for notes. The other option is to customize the installer so the client by default installs with sametime version 8.5.2. The problem is that you need sametime client version 8.5.2 with Sametime 8.5.2 server. Thus the need to upgrade the embedded sametime client.

One option is to first install the client and then run the sametime upgrade for notes.

We’ll analyse the section option here, I recently received a request from a customer to package just this.

What do we need to perform this customization:

1) A fresh Windows XP machine / Virtual Machine. Make sure this machine doesn’t already contain the notes client installed on it.

2) Lotus Notes 8.5.3 Client media (https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24029058)

3) Add To Kit and Trim Update Site tool, these are available at ( http://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21366669 ). Download the same.

4) SuRunAsWizard.exe ( The program directory of Notes 7.0.2 and above contains an updated version of this wizard (SUSetRunAsWizard.exe))

5) sametime-connect-for-notes.exe ( you’ll find it in sametime client for windows media )

And thats it, we’re ready to go..

So here are the steps we need to follow:

1) Create a folder called MyNotesCustomization on C: (C:MyNotesCustomization). Ensure that you have write / full access to the working directory.

2) Extract the “Lotus Notes Installation Kit” to C:MyNotesCustomizationuser_client_original.

3) Press Cancel now

4) Say Yes

5) Say Finish at this point. We have now successfully extracted the media for the customization.

6) Copy all files from C:MyNotesCustomizationuser_client_original to C:MyNotesCustomizationstep1

7) Copy the TrimUpdateSite ( downloaded earlier ) to the folder C:MyNotesCustomization

8) Navigate to C:MyNotesCustomization and run the trimUpdateSite.exe by double clicking the exe file.

9) Navigate to C:MyNotesCustomizationstep1 using the trimUpdateSite.exe and select the file updateSite.zip

10) Now select the features you wish to delete from the installation kit and click on “process selections”. I selected ( press CTRL to select more than one components ) the Composite Application Editor, IBM Lotus Sametime and Symphony Integrated. Bare minimum you should select IBM Lotus Sametime.

11) After the trimUpdateSite.exe utility has removed the selected files [this action can take some minutes] we can go the the next step. At this point we have removed the integrated sametime 8.5.1 from the lotus notes client 8.5.3 installation media.

12) Copy the files from C:MyNotesCustomizationstep1 to C:MyNotesCustomizationstep2

13) Extract the sametime clients installation media file to C:TempSametime852

14) Navigate to “C:TempSametime852SametimeStandardClientsametimeclient.for.notesWindows” and run the sametime-connect-for-notes.exe

15) Unpack the files to C:MyNotesCustomizationIBM Lotus Sametime Embedded 8.5.2

16) Copy the sametime.embedded.addon.win32.20110516-1716.zip from C:TempSametime852SametimeStandardClientsametimeclient.for.notesWindows to C:MyNotesCustomizationdeploy

17) Rename sametime.embedded.addon.win32.20110516-1716.zip to notes.toolbox.updateSite.zip

18) Copy the C:MyNotesCustomizationIBM Lotus Sametime Embedded 8.5.2deployinstall.addon.xml to C:MyNotesCustomizationdeploydeployinstall.xml

19) Now edit the C:MyNotesCustomizationdeploydeployinstall.xml and change every reference from sametime.embedded.addon.win32.20110516-1716.zip to updateSite.zip. BE CAREFULL! and save the file.

20) Copy the addtokit.exe file downloaded earlier to C:MyNotesCustomization

21) Open the Command Prompt ( Run-> cmd ) and then run the following command to test everything (dryrun, no change, only a test):

addtoKit -d -n C:MyNotesCustomizationdeploy C:MyNotesCustomizationstep2

If you are happy with the output you can add the Sametime client to the installation kit via:

addtoKit -d C:MyNotesCustomizationdeploy C:MyNotesCustomizationstep2

22) Now open the C:MyNotesCustomizationstep2deployinstall.xml with notepad

23) Search for Sametime, You will find now a section similar like the following:

after the lines you need to delete 9 lines that follow which would look similar to the following:

24) Save the file, we’re almost done.

25) We now need to Package it back to a single file

26) Double click the SUSetRunAsWizard.exe file ( as mentioned before this file can be found in notes program directory )

27) Click Next on the Welcome Screen

28) On the Screen for Account Information, Check the option “Create Self-extrating Package without using UserName and Password”, click Next.

29) Select the option “Store the files into the SuRunAs executable, creating a self contained package(this is selected by default), click Next.

30) On Select Attachments screen, add all the files present in respective package folder by clicking on “AddFiles” button. Browse to the desired package folder. Select all the files present in the package by using Ctrl+O option.

31) You can now see All the files attached in window “Files to be bound”, Locate the setup.exe file and check it. Click on Next

32) on Command Line Information enter the below string as it is. Please ensure the string is copied exactly as shown below and then click next.

/s /v”ALLUSERS=1 /qb+”
33) On Output Information give the path of the respective folder where u want to store the one click Exe.

34) On Summarty Informaton screen just check the information and then click on Finish.

35) The wizard will create the SURunas.exe file in the specified folder. Rename this file to reflect the name of actual package.

Now you can test these single click installer exe created for each of the package on your system. We’re done!!!
